Fullerton's downtown features buildings dating to 1892, officially protected through preservation zones and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Downtown Fullerton's oldest structures date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, a period that saw the city develop from a small agricultural settlement into a thriving commercial center. The Santa Fe Depot, built in 1892, remains one of the oldest downtown buildings. The Farmers and Merchants Bank, constructed in 1904 and redesigned in 1922, and the Fullerton Auditorium, built in 1920, are landmarks that define the character of the core downtown. The Union Pacific Depot, completed in 1923, connected the city to regional rail networks.
The City of Fullerton established a formal Mills Act Program in April 2020 to help preserve these historic properties, offering property tax reductions to owners who actively restore and maintain qualifying buildings. The downtown's blend of early-20th-century architecture, preserved through both designation on the National Register of Historic Places and active community stewardship, makes it a destination for both residents and visitors interested in Southern California's built heritage.
