No-exam life insurance

Which applicants qualify for accelerated underwriting, how the process works, and what happens if you don't.

Many carriers now feature accelerated underwriting: for applicants within specific age and amount thresholds, they provide approval using the application itself, prescription data, driving records and other available information rather than ordering a paramedical exam. Some decisions arrive the same day. Each rate quote on this site indicates whether an exam is required, possibly required, or not required for that specific product.

What it changes

No exam does not mean no underwriting review. Your answers go through verification, and a policy issued based on incorrect information can be challenged in its first two years. If the carrier's data uncovers concerns, it may ask for an exam or lab tests; you decide whether to move forward at that point.

Who tends to qualify

Many applicants under approximately 60 seeking amounts up to the carrier's accelerated limit, with no serious health issues and no tobacco use for a year or more, may qualify. If your doctor recently ordered blood work, some carriers will accept those results instead of requiring an exam.

When an exam is needed, it is usually a 20- to 30-minute appointment with a paramedic at your home or business in the Fullerton region, and it costs you nothing. For healthy applicants, the results often improve your rate classification, so an exam is not automatically a drawback.
